At this year’s Wishes & Dreams event, we will be introducing some of our heroes, like three-year-old Jeremiah, who was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma in his eye and wished for Christmas lights for his sisters. Make-A-Wish worked with others in the community to bring Jeremiah and his sisters a very special Christmas. Jeremiah is an example of one of our many local children supporters of Make-A-Wish have helped. And there are many others.

In Merced County, Make-A-Wish has granted approximately 80 wishes in the last ten years, with the cost of a wish now averaging $5,000. Many of these children spend long hours at doctors’ offices and hospitals, missing the opportunity to enjoy the simple pleasures of childhood. Instead, most of our wish children know more about needles and blood counts than interacting with other children. Our most popular wishes are Disney World, Disneyland and computers, but we have granted a variety of unique wishes. Recent Merced County wishes have included a Disney Cruise for a young boy suffering from Rasmussen’s Encephalitis whose wish was to see Alaska.

Through your generosity, many wonderful wishes in our community have come true. Our goal for this fifth annual Merced County fundraiser is to increase awareness and raise funds to serve the needs of our very special children, and to bring some magic to their lives.

• Table Sponsor ($1000): A table for 8 including wine and a gourmet dinner prepared by DeAngelo’s Restaurant. You will also receive table signage, special recognition in the evening’s event program and in our newspaper thank-you ad.
• Dream Table Sponsor ($2000): Everything included in the Table Sponsorship plus hosted cocktails for table guests, a quarter page in the event program, and a Dream Sponsor plaque.
• Wish Table Sponsor ($3000): Everything included in the Dream Sponsorship plus a personal attendant for hosted cocktails for your table of 10, round-trip limousine service for ten from one Merced-area location, a half page in the event program, and a Wish Sponsor plaque.

The Silver Spur Gala benefiting Make-A-Wish of Central California will be held on Friday, May 18, 2012 at the historic Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace.  More than 300 guests are expected to attend this relaxing and fun event. Along with a mouth-watering steak dinner, guests will be able to browse the memorabilia, sample wines, peruse the distinctive silent and live auction items, and dance the night away to the country sounds of STAMPEDE. This unique event will also feature some moving and powerful stories about the struggles of critically ill children and their families in our community and how Make-A-Wish is making a difference in their lives. The mission of Make-A-Wish is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. The wish replaces thoughts of countless medical treatments and hospital visits with much needed joy and laughter. Wishes provide wish kids and their families the hope and strength to get through the difficult times. Over 30% of the wishes granted by the Central California chapter are for Kern County children. Make-A-Wish takes care of all the planning and all costs associated with the wish for the WHOLE family.  Even in this uncertain economy, they never turn away a medically eligible child and continue to grant wishes.

The Macy’s Believe campaign benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation during the 2011 holiday season. Entering its fourth year, this campaign draws on Macy’s storied association with the holidays (Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Miracle on 34th Street).

The Believe campaign is rooted in a letter to the editor written by 8-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon in 1897 asking if there is a Santa Claus. New York Sun editor Francis P. Church responded with a poignantly worded essay on the importance of believing, including the famous line: “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist…”

On Friday, Dec. 9 Macy’s will again celebrate National Believe Day. The purpose of National Believe Day is “to celebrate the spirit of generosity and goodwill while spreading the holiday season’s message of joy and kindheartedness toward all.” The Make-A-Wish Foundation will support National Believe Day by granting wishes or planning wish-related activities in its chapters nationwide.

Involve your friends and family in supporting children’s wishes by encouraging them to write a letter to Santa. Collect the letters and take them to your nearest Macy’s to support the Believe campaign. For every letter received, Macy’s will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, up to $1 million.

Cold Stone Creamery® will host the 10^th Annual World’s Largest Ice Cream Social, a fundraising event to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of America and its chapters across the country.

On Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2010, Cold Stone Creamery stores in the Central Valley and throughout the United States, Guam and Puerto Rico, invite ice cream lovers to experience the joy of ice cream at a nostalgic event that promises wholesome family entertainment, fun activities and lots of ice cream.

From 5-8 p.m., customers will receive a 3-ounce serving of Sprinkled with Wishes™ Creation™ in exchange for a donation to this worthy cause. Donations that night and all month long will benefit the local chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
