When asked why, given that he could have wished for almost anything, he wished to meet Jim Davis, Zack replied, “I wanted to meet the creator of my favorite fat cat. Garfield makes me laugh so much.”
Zack’s parents confirm that Garfield comic books were a humorous relief during a dismal time. “Often he’d be lying in bed with his nose in a Garfield book and I’d hear him laughing right out loud,” says mom Linda. “Right now he owns about 25 of those books and his collection is still growing.” Zack readily admits he has a lot in common with the famous orange tabby, “I hate Mondays, I hate waking up early, I don’t like dogs and I don’t like to work.”
The family was picked up by limo at their home in Prather and flown to Indiana to visit Paws, Inc., Jim Davis’ studio. The cartoonist greeted Zack in his office, where a bowl of M&Ms, Zach’s favorite candy, was waiting for him. The visit included Zack and Mr. Davis exchanging drawings of cats, touring the building, and meeting other artists and staff members.
Make-A-Wish volunteers say Zack’s wish was very original and that Mr. Davis was excited to be part of it. Says Zack, “I’ll bet he’s the best boss. I hope I get to work for him one day.” Zack's dad, Will added, “He’s a very friendly, down-to-earth guy.”
During their stay in Indianapolis Zack's family also received guest passes to the Children’s Museum and Caribbean Cove Water Park. Zack’s wish was sponsored by United Health Care and organized by volunteers at Make-A-Wish in Fresno, CA and Indianapolis, IN.
Zack and his family extend their thanks to the caring, thoughtful people of Make-A-Wish who paid such close attention to detail, taking the trouble to get to know Zack and making him feel like a superstar; to United Health Care for making the wish come true; and to Jim Davis for agreeing to participate in the wish. Claims Zack, “It was the best day of my life!”
